Maharashtra is India's largest medical education state with 95+ MBBS colleges and over 18,000 MBBS seats. Maharashtra's medical colleges span some of India's most prestigious institutions — from the 177-year-old Grant Medical College Mumbai (1845) to Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, considered among Asia's finest teaching hospitals. MBBS counselling in Maharashtra is conducted by Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), Maharashtra for state quota seats under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. AIIMS Nagpur and Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune are filled through separate central and defence quota processes.
Maharashtra has 43 government medical colleges offering MBBS at ₹1,62,100/year for Open category candidates (with significant fee concessions for reserved categories). The crown jewels are Mumbai's trio — Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital (closes under AIR 5,000), Grant Medical College & JJ Hospital (closes under AIR 8,000), and Lokmanya Tilak MC Sion (closes under AIR 12,000). BJ Medical College Pune, established 1964 with 250 seats, and GMC Nagpur (1947) are the next-tier government colleges highly sought by Maharashtra students. Newer government colleges in Bhandara, Buldhana, Washim, Jalna, Hingoli, and Gadchiroli have significantly lower cutoffs, offering opportunities for ranks up to 47,000.
Maharashtra has 52+ private and deemed MBBS colleges. Leading deemed universities include Bharati Vidyapeeth University Medical College Pune, Dr. DY Patil Medical College Pimpri, Padmashree DY Patil Medical College Navi Mumbai, Mahatma Gandhi Missions Medical Colleges (Aurangabad, Navi Mumbai, Panvel), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Wardha (Datta Meghe), Rural Medical College Loni (Pravara), and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Karad. Private fees range from ₹6,21,500/year (Dr. NY Tasgaonkar, cheapest) to ₹15,57,000/year (Vedantaa Institute, Palghar). All private colleges in Maharashtra are regulated by DMER and no direct admissions are allowed.
Maharashtra has a unique reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) / Maratha community which has its own separate cutoff category in DMER counselling. In 2025, the SEBC closing rank was AIR 47,483 (Round 1) for government colleges — slightly relaxed compared to Open category. Along with SEBC, Maharashtra has several other state-specific categories: VJ (Vimukta Jati), NT-B, NT-C, NT-D (Nomadic Tribes) which are unique to Maharashtra and significantly expand admission opportunities for candidates from these communities. Our Maharashtra MBBS Predictor is the only tool that provides separate cutoff data for all these Maharashtra-specific categories including SEBC.
Maharashtra DMER State Quota (85% seats) is available only to Maharashtra domicile candidates and uses Maharashtra-specific category reservations. MCC All India Quota (15% seats in government colleges) is open to all India candidates and uses national OBC/SC/ST/EWS categories. AIQ cutoffs for Maharashtra top colleges (Grant MC, Seth GS, BJ Pune) are usually higher than state quota as they attract top rankers from across India. Non-Maharashtra candidates should focus on AIQ seats in government colleges and institutional quota / deemed university seats in private colleges. Our predictor covers all these pathways in one unified tool.
