WBMCC West Bengal MBBS Counselling 2026 — Complete Guide for NEET Aspirants

West Bengal offers 6,349 MBBS seats across 40 medical colleges for NEET 2026. The state has two types of institutions — government colleges (including ESIC) and private colleges — with clearly defined quota systems. All state quota admissions are handled by the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) under the Directorate of Medical Education, Government of West Bengal. The remaining 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges go through MCC counselling.

Medical College Kolkata — West Bengal's Premier Institution

Medical College, Kolkata, established in 1838, is not just West Bengal's best medical college — it is one of Asia's oldest and most prestigious. In 2025, it closed at AIR 5,684 for the General UR category under state quota, making it one of the toughest government medical colleges to get into in eastern India. IPGMER and Nilratan Sircar Medical College are close competitors, both closing within AIR 10,000 for general category. RG Kar Medical College, despite the media attention it received in 2024, remains a highly sought-after institution with strong academics and excellent clinical exposure.

OBC-A and OBC-B — West Bengal's Unique Category System

West Bengal divides OBC into two sub-categories: OBC-A and OBC-B. These are separate communities with distinct reservation lists, completely separate merit ranks, and separate seat reservations in every West Bengal medical college. This is different from how OBC works in most other states and in MCC national counselling. In 2025, OBC-A closed at AIR 11,217 while OBC-B closed at AIR 10,472 for Medical College Kolkata — showing meaningful differences. Most national predictors lump these together or ignore them entirely. Our predictor is one of the very few tools that covers OBC-A and OBC-B as separate categories with actual historical WBMCC data.

Private Medical Colleges in West Bengal 2026

West Bengal has 15 private medical colleges offering 2,350 MBBS seats. Established institutions like IQ-City Medical College, Burdwan, KPC Medical College, Jadavpur, and Jagannath Gupta Institute, Kolkata are well-regarded. Newer additions such as East West Institute of Medical Sciences, Krishnanagar Institute, and Jakir Hosain Medical College have expanded access further. All admissions in private colleges go through WBMCC counselling — no direct college-level admissions are allowed. Non-West Bengal domicile students can apply for management quota seats from the beginning of counselling, unlike some states that restrict non-domicile candidates to later rounds.

Domicile Rules for West Bengal MBBS Admission 2026

West Bengal domicile is required for state quota seats in government colleges. Valid domicile formats include A1, A2, B, and e-District certificates. For management quota seats in private colleges, domicile is not required — any NEET-qualified candidate from India can apply. For NRI quota, candidates must meet NRI / OCI / PIO eligibility as per Supreme Court and MCC guidelines. This flexibility in private college management quota makes West Bengal one of the more accessible states for non-domicile NEET aspirants with higher ranks.

Counselling Rounds in West Bengal NEET UG 2026

WBMCC conducts counselling in four rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, and a final Stray Vacancy Round. In Round 1, candidates can upgrade or exit freely. From Round 2 onwards, security deposit rules apply. The stray vacancy round requires in-person document verification, and not joining after allotment leads to debarment. Counselling fees are non-refundable — ₹2,000 for unreserved candidates and ₹1,500 for SC / ST / OBC / EWS / PwD candidates. Our predictor shows round-wise cutoff trends so you can plan your entry round strategically.
